Can you smell a sunrise? It smells dewey and fresh, like wet laundry when you first hang it on the line to dry. Can you taste a sunrise? It tastes cold and bright, like sparkling snow with a splash of lemonade. Can you feel a sunrise? It feels young and reassuring, like a child taking your hand.

My goal this winter is to
create my own sunshine despite the wet Seattle weather and this month I am focusing on creating beautiful sunrises for myself every day. So, how can I manage to create the same feelings I mention above?

Smell: I have been using my great smelling lotions that I normally save for special occasions. It brings a smile to my face as I smell the lovely scents. I have also been using my big vanilla candle that, again, I used to save for when we had company over. Why did I never use these things before? I am special and every day is special and both deserve to smell great.

Taste: I have been buying more citrus and am loving the difference it makes in my day. By simply adding a squirt of lemon or lime to my food I greatly enhance the pleasure I get from it. I also love the bright colors they make in my kitchen.

Feel: I am trying to be more physically affectionate with my children. The power of touch is an amazing thing. It is very difficult to feel lonely, useless, or cold, when hugging a vibrant, loving child. I have never been a "touchy-feely" kind of person but I'm slowly being converted by my awesome children.

What other things could I do in order to Smell, Taste, and Feel the sunrise on a daily basis?

I think a good pine or cedar scented candle would also work to wake up the senses.

What kind of ice cream goes well with a squirt of lemon or lime? I can't picture any.

Hello! I know about the Seattle winters, I live there (here) too. I have lemon essential oil at my desk, always good for a pick-me-up. And there's always cheap sunscreen that smells like the beach.

:-)

My problem is creating rain during our long drought-filled summers...but now that I have a baby I appreciate the sunlight so much more.

I think you are doing a GREAT job of creating your own sunshine! I lived in Tacoma for 12 years...so I totally hear you on the SAD. Dreyers has a good orange-chocolate chip sherbert that helpes me quite a bit on rainy days. :D

Oh! Also...do you ever HEAR sunshine? What songs or music makes you happy? My song lately has been, "If I were a rich man" from Fiddler on the Roof. You know with the whole waving of the arms and stomping of the feet. I could be Tevia, I really could.

Me and Them, I can't believe I forgot to add hearing a sunrise. I have actually been doing just that. I have been listening to a great CD (it even has a sunrise pictured on its cover) called The Ultimate Relaxation Album II. It has my all time favoret song: the Flower Duet from the opera Lakme.

What a great concept!-- Create your own atmosphere of joy.

You know, years ago, Hubby and I used to eat by candlelight almost every evening, just for fun. Then we had kids, and kids and candles just didn't seem to go too well together. But now the kids are bigger than I am, so- why not? I think I'll go dig out the candles....

I love that you are creating your own sunshine. Is there a little spot in your house where you could paint some sunshine? A laundry room maybe. You could paint a bright, sunny mural. Lots of yellow and gold.

I know I said this before - I think - not to beat a dead horse - - for real, get the sun lamp!! I think you use it 15 minutes once a day, before 7am, every morning. You can rent these, too.

I am a very smell oriented person. I think a vanilla candle or a coconut lotion are wonderful!

Peach and raspberry sherbet are sunshine!!

I love the Flower Duet too!

I also love lemon-flavored anything. Boil any citrus peel in water for a while on the stove and it makes the house smell so nice.
