I remember really trying to be more aware of current events by watching and reading the news as often as I could. Shortly after that decision was the Summer Of Abductions, as I call it in my memory. It was the summer of the Elizabeth Smart case. News medias must do what Hollywood does. When one studio makes a natural disaster film, they ALL make a natural disaster film. When one makes an ancient civilization epic, they ALL must make movies with buff men from ancient civilizations. Well, that summer the news media picked out and highlighted every single child abduction they could find. I'm not saying the abductions didn't happen. I'm not saying they weren't worth reporting. I'm saying that after hearing about nothing but child abductions day after day after day I started to be scared of ever letting my children out of the house. I would wake up all through the night to continually count my children in their beds and to check windows and doors. I refused to let them be babysat by anyone. It was awful. So, I decided to scale back my involvement in the news of current events and just be happy with enjoying my children while they are still young. And ignorance has been bliss.Occasionally, though, I catch myself back up and read what I can find to know what is going on out there, in that big ol' world. The past two days I've been pleased to read two things that really make me smile. And if news can make a person smile I think it is well worth sharing. Thanks for the smiles.
I sent the "manifesto" to your little miss advice address. Enjoy.
I get very troubled in mind for every time I hear of a child being abducted - what the child and parents must go through is not what I care to think about because it disturbs me so. I believe news updates on how to our kids safe is the type of news we should be prepared to listen too for as long as it takes to keep the kids safe.
You are a ray of sunshine, you really are. :)

The gospel = good news, the very best of all!
Loved the anonymous money giver story. I'd already read the one about the ward in Washington D.C. I grew up near there so that was very interesting to me.
So *THAT'S* where my $10,000 went. I was looking for that!
Never, ever watch the news! I read whatever catches me eye and leave the rest alone. It's always bad anyway...
oh yea...I am always for happy news. It does get over whelming sometimes to read on and on about kidnappings, murder, and lies.
Happy news is always the good kind.
DH and I enjoy watching a few news shows together because we like staying up on current events, but it is always nice when they report the good will variety.
I remember that year--it was scary. I'm an avid newspaper reader. Yep, I'm old school.
Good news is always welcome, so is money in my mailbox. sigh...

(aka wonderyears)
I love when there are "Good News" stories in the news. I remember the "Year of the Abductions". I still have nightmares of my child disappearing. I do love to hear about the happy endings that rarely, but occasionally, occur.
we finally cancelled our newspaper subscriptions... dh prefers the news, I prefer NPR for the global perspective and a variety of news sites that Ican navigate without much "distraction" or haivng to wade through the things that get sensualized.
lol amber!
We don't get the newspaper and I very seldom watch the news anymore. My Mom thinks that I should so I will know what is going on in the world around me. But, I just let my Mom tell me...because she always does just that. LOL!
Thanks for the links to the GOOD news in this crazy world!!
Have a great day!
I'm smiling that I found your blog...what a delight! I was pregnant with my first during the Elizabeth Smart situation...it was so scarry to me. These days...I watch about the first 5 minutes of the local news...then I move on and get the rest of my news from the newspaper...That way I can choose what I read (and see).
