It's All In How You Say It

Nurse to me last week: "Hmmmm, you have gained a LOT of weight since the last time we saw you. You know that isn't good right? You should only have gained 3-5 pounds and you've gained 11. You really need to be more watchful of what you eat, dearie. Remember, you aren't really eating for two, ok? Ok."

Me, later that evening talking to my husband: "Waaaaaaaa, she called me faaaaaat."
Husband to me: "What kind of ice cream do you want?"
Me to husband: "You want me to be fat. It's all your fault. Waaaaaaaaa! I'll take a bowl of sorbet, please. Waaaaaaaa."

Doctor to me yesterday: "Ok, looking at your chart it says that your weight jumped a bit, but where are you putting it all? You look fabulous to me! Look at your legs, they are so skinny. I'm sure it is just water weight but keep an eye on it anyway. I don't want you getting too uncomfortable the closer we get to your due date."

Me to husband, later that day: "My doctor is so nice. She said I look fabulous."
Husband to me: "What kind of ice cream do you want?"
Me to Husband: "What, and ruin my fabulous figure? No thanks, I think I'll just munch on some veggie sticks and finish off this water bottle."

It's not what you say, but how you say it.

That is right! But sorbet really isn't that bad... it's not like Ben & Jerry's Half Baked (although, have you tried the frozen yogurt kind?? mmmmm!!) :)

that nurse should be sorely chastised. doesn't she know how fragile pregnant women are? like you didn't already know that 11 lbs was more than you should have gained. some people just don't know when to zip it!
sounds like you've got a great doctor, though.
hope you still make room for a little sorbet to go with those veggies and water! when are you due, anyway?

Have an extra scoop for that one!

Michal,
I am due June 26th. And, yes, I am still eating my ice cream, just not as much as before. =)

(Sounds like you've got a nice doctor!)

Fabulous! Your doctor is so smart! I eat chocolate when I'm mad!

Nearly everything in life is really about how you say it, and it sounds like your doctor has successfully learned that life lesson. Now the nurse needs to take some lessons.

Having just seen you today, I think you look fabulous as well!

I recall a very similar conversation during my first pregnancy...only with me I needed Zips french fries and a Dr. pepper to recover:-)

Well, obviously the nurse must not have ever been pregnant before. The nerve!

LOL!

I'm sure you look great. I find nurses to be a lot tougher to deal with than doctors on average.

But I can't believe you are due in just over 2 months. It doesn't seem that long ago that you realized you were pregnant :)

What a crack up. And isn't that the truth! I can't believe that your nurse would say that. What kind of person would do that to a pregnant mom! gee whiz

Enjoy your sorbet!

I remember this exact same conversation, albeit it was a few years ago, ahem. Hubby didn't like mean nurse calling me fat...and told her so, in his quiet voice. She wouldn't even look me in the eye after that. What a guy!

You are so true!

You have a wonderful excuse to gain. Don't even worry - you will lose it.

Enjoy your ice cream! =)

This is hilarious!

I love your husband's eternal support.

Man: Wife is upset. Needs ice cream.

Man: Wife is happy. Needs ice cream.

I blogstalk you on occasion since I also have an intense addiction to ice cream. (I found you through Michal) I ate ice cream almost every day of both of my pregnancies and my kids and I are just fine. I do have unwanted pounds, but my pregnancy weight is gone. So I say as long as you feel healthy, make yourself happy. You won't have much time to do that with a newborn. :)

Did that nurse really need to put it that way?

That's one of the major reasons i like my ob(and his nurse). They never mentioned my weight w/the last 3 pregnancies, only when I lost some. After your 5th pregnancy, you kind of know how your body works. You have a good husband; that's very important, too!
